EVOL.LGBT: A Leading Resource for the LGBTQ+ Community Faces Censorship and Deletion Amid Pride Month
Los Angeles – May 30, 2024 – EVOL.LGBT, a prominent platform dedicated to celebrating diversity and promoting LGBTQ+ rights, is under fire as its Instagram account, @evollgbt, was deleted in March without explanation or communication from Instagram. This deletion comes at a critical time, just before Pride Month, when the visibility and support for the LGBTQ+ community are more important than ever.
EVOL.LGBT, which has grown to become a vital resource for LGBTQ+ individuals both in the US and around the world, has also faced increasing censorship attempts from the Russian government. The Russian Federation has added EVOL.LGBT to its list of websites prohibited for public distribution. Moreover, Roskomnadzor, Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media, has issued multiple requests to YouTube to block EVOL.LGBT’s channel, which boasts almost 600,000 subscribers.
In response to these actions, the founder of EVOL.LGBT, Rick Jones, expressed deep disappointment and called for immediate action. “Our platform has been a safe haven for LGBTQ+ individuals to connect, share their stories, and find support. The decision by Instagram to delete our account and the censorship attempts by the Russian government are blatant disregards for the rights and dignity of our community.”EVOL.LGBT calls on Instagram (Meta) to provide transparent and accountable explanations for the deletion of their account and to take immediate steps to reinstate access. Furthermore, EVOL.LGBT urges the international community to condemn the Russian government’s oppressive actions and stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Russia.
With over 700,000 followers across social media, more than 60,000 monthly website visits, and event vendors from all 50 US states and several other countries, EVOL.LGBT is a crucial hub for the LGBTQ+ community worldwide. As Pride Month begins on June 1st, the timing of these actions is particularly damaging, highlighting the ongoing struggles for visibility and representation that the LGBTQ+ community faces globally.
